If you are allergic to gluten, but not allergic to donuts, then this recipe is for you. Though desserts are not my specialty, I am discovering some very good recipes made with urad dal flour.
What is urad dal? Urad dal, is also called black lentil or black gram when the skin is on. The exact same lentil is called white lentil when the skin has been removed. It has long been grown in India and is highly prized there. It is used to make soups, to make dosa (fermented crepes or pancakes), to make papadum (large, thin, crisp wafers), and to make vatis (deep fired donuts). To make vatis, the urad dal is ground into a paste or flour, which is how I use it in this recipe.

@ Peter Piper Your hummus made with black-eyed peas sounds good! What did
you put in it besides black-eyed peas? (cumin?, garlic?, tahini? other?)
Why don’t you just use a blender or food processor?
Hi Barbara I wanted to ask something about my alcat test rotation diet.on
day 1 in my chart m allowed to black eyed peas from legume family.on day 3
m allowed to eat black beans,Lima beans,pinto beans,kidney,mung & navy
beans.my concern is if m allowed to eat all beans on day 3,can I eat black
eyed peas on day 1?aren’t they all belong to same family and supposed to be
eat on one particular day.plz reply.also can u provide food chart that
belongs to a particular family?thanks
@ Peter Piper I like your creativity. If you try this recipe with
black-eyed pea flour, please let me know how it turns out!
Here’s the recipe: 3 garlic cloves, peeled, 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice (2
lemons), 1/3 cup tahini, 1 tsp cumin, 1/2 tsp sea salt, 1/2 tsp paprika, 2
(15.8 oz) cans black-eyed peas, drained. Blend all in a blender and garnish
with chives if you like. I like mine a bit more tangy so next time I make
it, I’ll add a bit more lemon juice.
I’d like to try this with black-eyed-pea flour. I can’t have lentils,
otherwise I’d make it with lentil flour.
They look really good I’m going to get one of those donut pans and give it
a try! Well done for posting that recipe Barbara many thanks.
I have not tried it yet, but I HAVE made hummus with black-eyed peas.
YUMMMMM…..!!!!!
@lovingarttoday No, I haven’t tried this with chickpea flour instead of
urad dal flour n this recipe, but I think it is a great idea. Chickpea
flour is a little heavier and has a stronger taste, but I’m guessing
especially if you want to make a chocolate cake donut, it would be
wonderful. If you try chickpea flour for donuts, please let me know how you
like it!
