Vegan Recipe: Jackfruit Tacos | Jason Wrobel

Culinary superstar, Jason Wrobel, aka J-Wro, throws his hat into the ring, and serves up a plate of organic jackfruit tacos. Time for an education break! Jackfruit is native to parts of South and Southeast Asia, and is the largest tree-born fruit, some reaching as much as 80 pounds! Its flavor is comparable to a combination of apple, mango, banana, and pineapple when ripe. They taste more like chicken when green. So how can you go wrong? Okay, back on track. To make the filler for our tacos, start by adding safflower to your pan, heating it to a medium-high temp. Once heated, add yellow onion and minced garlic, and sauté until translucent. Add the jackfruit, and mix it all together. Next, add lime juice, maple syrup, cumin, coriander, chili powder, cinnamon, and apple cider vinegar. For extra minerals, add a dash of Sunwarrior Liquid Vitamin Rush. Give your concoction a quick stir, then finish by adding gluten-free beer. Get to a rolling boil, then reduce to a medium-low heat, and let sit for about 25 minutes. Once most of the liquid is absorbed, add salt and pepper, and take it off the heat. Grab your favorite taco shell, fill ‘er up, and top with fresh salsa, guac, and cilantro. This is a cool and unusual substitute to traditional tacos that even the biggest of meat-eaters are sure to enjoy.

Thanks for sharing I have been using vital wheat gluten, tempeh or garbanzo bean flour to make falafel and other recipes and it has gotten repetitive this jackfruit recipe and others I have seen has gotten my creative juices flowing again I can't wait to try.

Yo – You're hilarious! Love it just subbed!!! I work at Sage Vegan Bistro in Culver and we make tacos with jackfruit – so good!

I've read somewhere that you can boil and cook the stringy parts of the jackfruit (between the pods) and that they are also good in recipes.

Are you using canned jackfruit in syrup or water? The jackfruit you put in the pan looked way different than what I use.

I'm under the impression that it wasn't that good. You only mentioned how spicy it was.

followed the recipe exactly and they were horrible!! wayyy too sour, too spicy, completely inedible.  Wasted a whole night getting the ingredients, prepping, cooking and cleaning and now i'm still hungry! argggg gotta find a better jackfruit taco recipe. let me know if anyone has a good one.

That looks and sounds absolutely delicious. This could spice up my traditional blackbean and kidney bean tacos. Now that I've gotten my mom to join me in my vegan explorations (she's not vegan but eats a lot of vegan food with me and even said she might go vegetarian or pesc) all it takes to win people over to the green side is continuously eating delicious food around them. It runs off eventually! Thanks for the recipe!

    A question for Jason!

Should I use green jackfruit or ripe, and the pods or the stringy part?

Also, do you have a good technique for getting the rind off (it's very hard to cut in my experience…)?

I live in Bali where they are abundant and easy to get, so green or ripe are both easily available.

    Thank you so much!
