When making this I add a little bit of ginger to frying tuna. It gives the dish a fresh kick. I also use regular tomato pure/passata.

I used the tuna that comes in water and it was fine. This time, I managed to find some Tonino in Walmart for about $5, so I'm gonna make it again tonight even though I'm almost out of parmesan. Maybe I will grate some cheddar on top.

Would it be ok to use the cream of tomato from the can as a substitute?

Tuna and pasta do NOT work together. I tried. Ate half the bowl and had to throw out the rest.

About the cheese… It goes well with this dish. I had an italian boyfriend for many years and one time we made more or less the same dish as this one and both of us topped it with parmesan :)
